Wir wollen das "gesamte Leben" eines Produktes betrachten – von der Herstellung bis zur Entsorgung. Glitzer-Make-up darf keine winzigen Plastikteilchen ("Mikroplastik") enthalten. Das ist wichtig für die Umwelt. Aber manchmal sind Umwelt- und Sozialstandards nicht gleichzeitig gut. Wenn es um Nachhaltigkeit geht, kann das Dinge verkomplizieren. Wir schlüpfen in die Rollen von Produzentinnen, Händlerinnen und Verbraucherinnen und überlegen uns gemeinsam, wie Entscheidungen getroffen werden.

Arezki and his colleagues explore the changing relationship between armed conflicts and non-military foreign aid. They find that the sign of the relationship linking (bilateral) aid commitments to the onset of armed conflicts in aid recipient countries is statistically significant and goes from negative to positive after the year 2001. They also find that their results are driven by grants rather than loans and by aid for health and humanitarian purposes. The results are robust to a myriad of checks including substituting armed conflicts with terror attacks, accounting for debt relief initiatives and using different estimators. They interpret their results as stemming from a shift in donor preferences induced by 9/11 attacks toward supporting conflict affected countries, confirming the primacy of donors' interests over recipient needs.

Das FIW – Kompetenzzentrum "Forschungsschwerpunkt Internationale Wirtschaft" kündigt seine 16. Forschungskonferenz "International Economics" an und bitte um die Einreichung von (vollständigen) Workping Papers, die auf der Konferenz präsentiert werden sollen. Das Hauptziel der Konferenz ist es, Wirtschaftswissenschafter:innen, die auf dem Gebiet der "Internationalen Wirtschaft" arbeiten, eine Plattform zu bieten, um aktuelle Forschungsergebnisse zu präsentieren. Beiträge von Doktorand:innen, jungen Fakultätsmitgliedern und jungen Forscher:innen in ähnlichen Positionen sind besonders willkommen, da die Konferenz junge Wirtschaftswissenschafter:innen unterstützen und ermutigen soll, indem sie ihnen die Möglichkeit gibt, ihre Arbeit sowohl anderen jungen Wirtschaftswissenschafter:innen als auch erfahrenen älteren Forscher:innen vorzustellen. Die Konferenz soll auch Forscher:innen und politische Entscheidungsträger:innen zusammenbringen, um ein Forum für Diskussionen darüber zu bieten, wie empirische Erkenntnisse effektiver in die aktuelle Wirtschaftspolitik einfließen können.

Personal bankruptcy offers over-indebted persons the opportunity to obtain a debt discharge under certain conditions. From 1995 to 2022, a total of around 205,000 personal bankruptcy petitions were filed in Austria. The annual number of applications rose steadily until the end of the 2000s. Since then, larger jumps in the number of cases have been observed, particularly in connection with reforms and changes in the political framework, such as during the COVID-19 crisis. This project, funded by the OeNB's Jubilee Fund (#18649), analyses determinants of personal bankruptcies in Austria since its introduction in 1995. The vast majority of studies on personal bankruptcies relate to the USA, whereas the situation in Austria has hardly been researched. We aim to address this gap by applying time series and panel econometric methods to Austrian data on consumer bankruptcies. We study their relation to policies, macroeconomic and sociodemographic variables. Our results indicate relatively large effects of bankruptcy rules (i.e., the changing conditions for debt discharge) and consumer debt levels.

This paper studies whether the interplay of social comparisons in housing and rising income inequality contributed to the household debt boom in the USA between 1980 and 2007. We develop a tractable macroeconomic model with general social comparisons in housing to show that changes in the distribution of income affect aggregate housing demand, aggregate debt and house prices if (and only if) social comparisons are asymmetric. In the empirically relevant case of upward-looking comparisons, rising inequality can rationalize up to a quarter of the observed debt boom.
