WIFO-Konjunkturtest

The WIFO-Konjunkturtest (business cycle survey) is a monthly survey of Austrian companies on their economic situation and its development in the coming months. The results of the WIFO-Konjunkturtest help to reliably assess the economic development in Austria at an early stage. The WIFO-Konjunkturtest has been conducted since 1954 and has been part of the "Joint Harmonised EU Programme of Business and Consumer Surveys" since 1996.

Die Ergebnisse des WIFO-Konjunkturtests zeigen im März eine weitere leichte Abschwächung der Konjunkturbeurteilungen der österreichischen Unternehmen. Der WIFO-Konjunkturklimaindex notierte mit 4,9 Punkten (saisonbereinigt) 0,6 Punkte unter dem Wert des Vormonats (5,5 Punkte). Der Rückgang ist sektoral vor allem auf eine weitere Abschwächung der Konjunkturbeurteilungen in der Bauwirtschaft zurückzuführen. Im Aggregat verschlechtern sich die aktuellen Lagebeurteilungen über alle Sektoren hinweg, während sich die Konjunkturerwartungen auf niedrigem Niveau verbesserten. Die Ergebnisse lassen eine Fortsetzung der konjunkturellen Seitwärtsbewegung für die nächsten Monate erwarten. Die unternehmerische Unsicherheit ging im März weiter zurück, signalisiert aber weiterhin erhöhte Konjunkturrisiken.

Economic Assessments Show Mixed Development. Results of the WIFO-Konjunkturtest (Business Cycle Survey) of March 2023
The results of the WIFO-Konjunkturtest (business cycle survey) show a further slight weakening in the economic assessments of Austrian companies in March. The WIFO Business Climate Index stood at 4.9 points (seasonally adjusted), 0.6 points below the value of the previous month (5.5 points). The sectoral decline is mainly due to a further weakening of economic assessments in the construction industry. In the aggregate, the current situation assessments deteriorated across all sectors, while economic expectations improved at a low level. The results suggest a continuation of the sideways economic movement for the coming months. Business uncertainty declined further in March but continues to signal increased economic risks.
